B.A./B.S. in Secondary Education Coursework

Back to program page

Our Secondary Education program includes all the requirements needed to be prepared to teach in just four years (or less if you are a transfer student)! For more details, review the sample degree plan and advising guides below. Degree plans will vary based on your content area and degree plan.

For details on classes you will take for your content area, refer to our Content Mastery Sheets

As you progress through the program, you will work with an Education advisor regularly to personalize your plan.

Years 1-2: Pre-Major Requirements

For the first two years of the program, you will take education prerequisite courses, courses to develop content expertise in secondary education (also known as content mastery courses), and other university requirements (such as general education). You may be able to complete some of these requirements at a community college. If you are a transfer student, see our Transfer Student Resource Page for transfer guides and work with an advisor to develop your degree plan.

Once you successfully complete the pre-major requirements, you will transition to the Professional Level (Years 3-4) of the program. To advance to the Professional Level, the following requirements need to be met:

  • 3.0 overall GPA + 90 earned credits
  • ED 216, 219, 253 (or equivalent) with C grade or better
  • Most Content Mastery Courses completed (up to three allowed during Professional Level)
  • Foundational Core Education courses completed
  • Second language courses completed (for BA degree only)

Years 3-4: Professional Level Requirements and Courses

During the Professional Level, you will begin a year-long practicum (Year 3) with a cohort of fellow students and begin foundational education courses. During year 4, you will advance to student teaching and take advanced coursework to prepare you for the classroom and getting your teaching license. Students will be placed in a local classroom and continue taking courses while completing student teaching.

You will also select a Focus Area to customize your degree and align with your goals and interests.

Example Focus Areas include:

  • English to Speakers of Other Languages Endorsement
  • Dual Language Specialization
  • Special Education
  • STEAM education
  • Connecting Families and Community
  • Minor or dual major

After graduation, you will have the requirements met to apply for your Oregon teaching license with an endorsement in your selected content area. Our licensure and placement coordinators will assist you throughout the process. We will also provide personalized support to program graduates who want to seek licensure in other states.
