Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education (MAT-SPED) Application Requirements
The Master in Arts in Teaching in Special Education is a fully online program that leads to 1) a master’s degree, and 2) recommendation for licensure in K-12 Special Education: Generalist.
Application Requirements
- A bachelor's degree (necessary for admission to all graduate degree programs) documented by unofficial transcripts. (Official transcripts required after admission.)
- A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter credits of graded undergraduate and any additional graduate coursework (necessary for admission to all graduate degree programs) documented by transcripts.
- Two essays
- Essay 1: Write a statement of objectives that clearly addresses the following three prompts (1-2 pages)
- What motivates you to pursue a master’s degree in special education? What drives your passion for working with students with diverse learning needs?
- Share your understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education and how you plan to advocate for students with diverse learning needs and/or their families.
- Describe your vision for your future classroom or career and how this program will help you achieve those goals.
- Essay 2: Provide a brief summary of your experience working with youth, particularly students with disabilities (1 page). Include any relevant instructional or classroom experiences, such as practicum placements, paid positions, or volunteer work. For each experience, explain the nature of your role and how it has prepared you for this program. A strong response will include self-reflection on cultural competence, demonstrating awareness of personal strengths and areas for growth. The quality of your writing and the depth of your experiences will both be considered.

- Official transcripts
- Provide names and contact information for 3 professional references who can speak to your qualifications and readiness for the program.
- Truthful answers to Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) character questions documented by the TSPC Character Questions form. Note: By Oregon law, successful applicants must submit one fingerprint card for processing by the Oregon State Police and the FBI.

Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching must be submitted through the Graduate School. All application materials must be completed to have your application considered.
