Research:

Focus on the language and literacy development of multilingual children and adolescents from immigrant backgrounds, and she uses ethnographic, longitudinal, qualitative, discourse-analytic and mixed-methods approaches to investigate issues related to literacy and classroom interaction, among other topics.


Recent and current research projects include a study of teacher inquiry into ESOL/ESL co-teaching and collaboration in K-12 classrooms, an ethnographic exploration of the home language and literacy practices of Spanish-speaking preschoolers from immigrant families, and a mixed-methods study of teacher and peer interaction and social networks in linguistically diverse middle school classrooms.

Currently conducts her research under the Teachers Educating All Multilingual Students (TEAMS) grant. Focus on multilingual and multicultural families’ connections to the community and education. With her current investigative studies, she expands current methodologies in order to push on the boundaries of how to do research as part of and with communities. Dr. McIntosh collaborates with Ph.D. students, graduate students and undergraduate students in order to prepare the next generation of researchers.
