Dr. Jana Bouwma-Gearhart received her doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction (2008) and master’s in Science Education (2003) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her earliest research concerned secondary science teachers’ and students’ response to modeling-based inquiry. Dr. Bouwma-Gearhart served as Assistant Researcher for the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER), for which she studied the effects of professional development programs on STEM graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty. After joining the faculty as assistant professor at the University of Kentucky as Assistant Professor, she co-founded the department of STEM Education and served as the Secondary Science Program Faculty Chair and Co-director of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Innovation Laboratory. She joined the faculty at Oregon State University as an Associate Professor in fall, 2012, also serving as the Director of the Science or Mathematics Education doctoral program. Dr. Bouwma-Gearhart is currently serving as the OSU College of Education’s Associate Dean of Research.

Research/Career Interests: 

Dr. Bouwma-Gearhart’s recent research concerns STEM faculty work and organizations at research universities, including 1) response to and implementation of education innovations, within and across the STEM disciplines, 2) use of data and data-driven decision-making to improve classroom practice and 3) individual and organizational learning and change towards education improvement. She has served as a researcher for the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, documenting work across disciplinary boundaries towards improving postsecondary STEM education, and PI or Co-I on five National Science Foundation Grants. Bouwma-Gearhart is author of over thirty peer-reviewed publications and research reports. Her research has been published in various higher education and science education-related journals including The Journal of Higher Education, The Review of Higher Education, The International Journal of Science Education, The Journal of Science Education and Technology, and Innovative Higher Education. She has served in leadership positions for the American Education Research Association and the American Association of University Women.
