HOW TO APPLY: ADULT AND HIGHER EDUCATION Ph.D. PROGRAM

The Adult and Higher Education Ph.D. Program will not be admitting students for the 2025-26 academic year.


 

Prerequisite Experience

  • Applicants must have completed a master's program in higher education or a related field.

  • If Master’s degree is in an unrelated field, documented professional working experience in higher education may substitute this requirement.

    • Preferred: Previous research or assessment experience

(Note: there is a required application fee)

You will need to provide:

  • Official Transcripts (unofficial transcripts may be uploaded prior to admission).

  • Résumé/CV

  • Writing Sample (everyone must provide an essay that addresses the prompts below)

  • 3 letters of reference; one must be from a former faculty member (Your references will be contacted by the Graduate School and asked to independently upload their letters).

Prompt for writing sample:

As a part of our admissions process, the faculty have provided three prompts to learn about your motivations for a doctoral education and your scholarly interests.

Formatting guidelines: Please limit your entire response to 1000 words. Be sure your response is grounded in the scholarly literature and cite as appropriate. Format your submission in 12-point Times New Roman font and adhere to APA 7th Edition standards. Please respond to the following:  

  • In what ways have your prior experiences, professional career path, and/or scholarly interests contributed to your decision to pursue a Ph.D. from the Adult and Higher Education program at Oregon State University?  

  • In what ways do your goals and experiences align with the program and College of Education’s emphasis on social justice and equity?  

  • With which faculty member are you most interested in collaborating? Faculty currently available to take on student advisees are Drs. Tenisha Tevis, Bach Mai Dolly Nguyen, and Gloria Crisp.  In what ways do your scholarly interests connect to the expertise of this faculty member? Note that it is strongly recommended that you correspond with that faculty member prior to applying.
