Mariah Liberty’s (pictured right) decision to become a teacher came from a familiar place — she was inspired by one of her own teachers.
“She embodied everything a great teacher should be,” Mariah said. “She genuinely cared for her students and their education. She believed in each of us and encouraged us to reach our full potential, creating a safe classroom environment.
“Knowing she attended OSU to become a teacher, I realized there was no better place for me to follow in her footsteps. I can only hope to make a similar impact someday.”
Teachers' impact on our lives is undeniable, and a new scholarship will make Mariah’s path to a classroom of her own a little easier.
Mariah was selected as the first recipient of the newly re-envisioned Herbert R. and Leota L. Laslett Scholarship, a competitive four-year award specifically for future teachers, funded at $18,000 per year for up to four years. While the College has had the Laslett Scholarship in place for nearly 20 years, this is the first time it has been used to fully fund the tuition of one deserving undergraduate student. With the creation of the new 4-year Bachelor of Science in Teaching in Elementary Education in Corvallis just this past year, the timing was perfect. Corvallis welcomed over 100 new first-year future teachers to this major just this fall.
“I’m pursuing a degree in education with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher,” Mariah said. “I'm excited about the opportunity to support children and make a positive difference in their lives. Having faced challenges at home during my own childhood, I deeply appreciated the teachers who were there for me in every way they could. I aspire to have a similar impact on the lives of kids, just as they did for me!”
