AHE Doctoral Program Class Profile

Admitted students to the Adult & Higher Education doctoral program hold a variety of administrative positions including directors, deans, and vice presidents. Students accepted to our recent cohort hold between 4-25 years of higher education experience. The cohort averages 10 years of practice, including multiple years of administrative experience at the director level or higher.


The Adult and Higher Education Doctoral cohort begins in Fall term

All admissions criteria apply to the EdD application cycle for 2022-23. Criteria for the PhD is still in development and will be updated on this site when available.

Prerequisite Experience

  • Applicants must have completed a master's program in a related field by start date.
  • Applicants need a minimum of three years of full-time professional experience in a two-year or four-year higher education organization (i.e. college or university).

You will need to provide:

  • Transcripts
  • Résumé/CV
  • Personal Professional Statement/Writing Sample (everyone must provide an essay that addresses the prompts below, you may provide an additional writing sample too.)
  • 3 letters of reference (Your references will be contacted by the Graduate School and asked to independently upload their letters)

Questions for Personal Professional Statement

As a part of our admissions process, the faculty have provided three prompts to learn about your motivations for a doctoral education, your leadership experience, and an area of research interest: (tips for a strong statement).

Formatting guidelines: Each prompt should be no longer than one-page, single spaced (500 words). In total, your statement should be no longer than three pages single spaced.

  • Prompt 1: What is your immediate and long-term career trajectory? Why do you want to pursue a doctoral degree in Adult & Higher Education at OSU to advance in that trajectory? 
  • Prompt 2: How have you impacted change as a leader on your campus? How will the experiences in this program contribute to your growth as an equity-minded leader? 
  • Prompt 3: Please tell us about a problem of practice that produces inequity in your field of work that may be an area of research interest.
