Dr. Eakin’s conference presentations and PhD dissertation research advising have focused on motivational interviewing, non-concurrent multiple baseline single-subject research design, school counselor site supervisor training, and math anxiety reduction. He continues to provide professional leadership on the role of school counselors in teaching students social-emotional skills. At the state and national level, he has been actively involved with the Evidence-Based School Counseling Board, Oregon School Counselor Association, White House Convening on Strengthen School Counseling Conferences, and the Three Principles Global Community.
Dr. Eakin has worked at Oregon State part-time or full-time for twenty-six years. He provided the leadership for the development and implementation of the hybrid masters in school counseling.
Gene has twenty-eight years experience as a school counselor with most of that time spent as Program Lead at a high school of 1400 students in the Willamette Valley. Gene is the Advocacy Chair for the Oregon School Counselor Association.
He and his colleague - Dr. Kathy Biles from Oregon State University Cascades - are among the first to introduce school counselors to motivational interviewing.
