Alex joined the CCLP faculty in 1998. Prior to that he was president of Albuquerque TVI, a community college in New Mexico. He has served as president of Rio Hondo College in Whittier, California, vice president for community and international programs at the University of New Mexico, and as a dean at New Mexico Military Institute. Alex has served on the board of directors for the President's Academy of the American Association of Community Colleges, as chairman of the Legislative Liaison Committee of the California Community Colleges, as president of the New Mexico Association of Community Colleges, and on the Community College Advisory Committee for the College Board. He founded the Doña Ana branch of New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1972, and describes that process as being one of the most interesting, satisfying and fun experiences of his career.
